Why study Mathematics and Finance? (Specialization program)

This program is designed to provide a strong education in the areas of mathematics, finance, economics and actuarial science. Graduates of our program can apply mathematical and statistical techniques to analyze financial products and manage financial risk.

This program can also be taken as part of a BSc with Honors degree.

Why take the BSc Specialization degree?

The Bachelor of Science Specialization degree provides a focused education in one program. You will take most of your courses in your main subject area, and are expected to maintain a higher standard of academic achievement. A Specialization degree can provide the background to help you proceed to a higher degree, but its primary function is to provide a comprehensive education at the undergraduate level.

This program can also be taken as part of a BSc Honors degree.

Yasmin is a recent Science graduate who was awarded the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship and is now studying at Oxford University. As a UAlberta student, Yasmin was President of the Health and Wellness student group and the founder of StolleryBOTs, a robotics program for patients at the Stollery Children's Hospital.

Preprofessional Study Time: 1 year

For 2nd year entry: at least 24 ( = units of course weight) required in the preceding Fall/Winter

  3. 6 in options (CMPUT 174 and CMPUT 175 recommended)
  4. ECON 101, 102 (6)
  5. 6 of junior English or 3 junior ENGL and 3 junior WRS

For 3rd year entry: ★60 required

  1. all required courses indicated above

  3. MATH 214, 215, 225, 253 (12)
  4. STAT 265 (3), STAT 266 (3)
  5. 9 in options

Admission Selection: Competitive. Completion of a minimum of 24 in each preceding Fall/Winter with a GPA of at least 2.7, plus a minimum GPA of 2.7 on the required courses.
