Why get a Doctor of Pharmacy degree?

Why take the PharmD for Practicing Pharmacists program?

This program is intended for graduates of a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree. If you do not hold that degree, please see Doctor of Pharmacy (entry-to-practice).

The PharmD for Practicing Pharmacists program combines coursework and practical experience to help position you to practice to a full scope as part of an interdisciplinary team in a variety of settings, including hospitals, primary care and family care clinics, and community practice. You’ll also be equipped with the knowledge, skills, and leadership qualities to work in various healthcare settings, organizations, or government agencies.

This program can be completed either full-time or part-time (distance).

The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences offers one of the leading entry-to-practice pharmacy programs in Canada, drawing from a tradition of excellence in pharmacy education, research, and practice dating back to 1914. We are also the only school in Canada to offer a dual Pharmacy/MBA degree, and one of the few schools to offer a post-professional PharmD program for practicing pharmacists who wish to complete advanced education in patient care.

Important information about admission to the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

The minimum requirements for admission to the PharmD program are a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from a recognized institution. Normally, an overall GPA of at least 3.0 or equivalent in a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree is required.

Additional Requirements:

  1. Proof of current licensure or eligibility for licensure as a pharmacist with the Alberta College of Pharmacists
  2. Authorization to administer drugs by injection
  3. Official transcripts from a Bachelor of Pharmacy program and any other postsecondary education completed
  4. Spoken English Requirement: Applicants must meet a spoken English requirement (see Spoken English Requirement)
  5. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  6. Cover Letter
  7. Three Letters of Reference
  8. Personal Interview

Admission Selection:

  • The admissions committee has the responsibility of selecting from among the applicants those individuals who have the highest levels of professional and academic achievement, and a demonstrated promise to successfully complete the program. The number of applicants is expected to exceed the number of available spaces and therefore not all qualified candidates will be selected for an interview or offered admission.
  • Applicants are ranked on academic achievement, professional experience, cover letter, letters of reference and a personal interview.

 

 

The Office of the Registrar administers over $28 million each year in scholarships, awards, and financial support for undergraduate students, as well as financial and loan advising. Additional scholarships are also available for specific faculties and programs.
